Genesis - Part 04 - The Chosen Family of Blessing

Scripture

Genesis 3:15

I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.

Genesis 12:1–3

1 Go from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, I will curse anyone who treats you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.

Observation

• These two passages are bookends of the same divine promise. In Genesis 3:15, spoken to the serpent in the garden, God announces the first gospel — the protoevangelium. A child of the woman will one day strike the serpent's head. The fall did not end God's plan; it began His promise of a coming Redeemer.
• Centuries later, God calls Abram out of Ur with a stunning promise: a great nation, a great name, and blessing that would overflow to all the families of the earth (Genesis 12:1–3). Notice the pattern — God doesn't bless Abram for Abram's sake alone. He chooses a family through which His blessing will flow to the whole world.
• That chosen family is the royal line of promise: Eve's promised offspring, then Abram's descendants, and ultimately Jesus Christ, who Matthew opens by calling "the son of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1). The offspring who strikes the serpent's head is the same family line God blesses and guards through Abram. God's covenant with Abram was never just about land — it was about the family through whom the world's Redeemer would come.

Application

• You are grafted into this family. Paul writes that if you belong to Christ, "you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to the covenant" (Galatians 3:29). God's chosen family of blessing is your family by faith.
• Blessing comes through obedience, not comfort. Abram had to leave his country and his father's house to receive the promise. God may be calling you out of your comfort zone — a job, a friendship, a familiar place — so His blessing can reach you and, through you, others.
• You are blessed to be a blessing. God told Abram his name would be great because he would be "a blessing to others." Ask yourself: is my family, my church, my neighborhood finding blessing through me?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for choosing a family of blessing that reaches all the way to me. Thank You that the promise You made in the garden and renewed with Abram found its fulfillment in Jesus, my Redeemer. Give me the courage to leave what is comfortable when You call, and make me a channel of Your blessing to the families around me. Amen.
